CITISIM
March - May 2006
Exhibited in: press to exit project space, Skopje | Kontekst galerija, Belgrade, Serbia | Мobile Studios project, Sofia, Bulgaria
Curated by: Elena Veljanovska, Boris Petrovski, Hristijan Panev
Artists: Neda Firfova, Anotnio Dimitrov, Boris Petrovski
The name is a neologism from the combination of the word City + ism. The city is understood as a “common denominator” – the collective concern of everyone involved in the projects; –ism with its context from art history is a proposition for yet another hypothetical art movement. Action and mobility within the city is what Citism aims to accomplish. Citism does not deal with history but with the current circumstantial evidence of authenticity and mythology in the contemporary urban codes.
The project finds its greatest motivation in the urban living, the transformations of the city and the people within, suggesting itself as a concept that modifies the space in order to outline and recreate an urban environment. Citism as a proposition is best expressed in a shape of conceptual exhibition that unveils the urban codes through three main segments: sound, visual and spatial mechanisms. Over time, Citism becomes analyzed by the “new space” created between the proposed artworks within the exhibition, creating an atmosphere as a by-product of a long-term collaboration between two curators and three artists (with one artist also performing as a curator). The works emerged from the collaborative function of the three autonomous, yet inseparable components of a new unified whole, fully complete when ideas are in tune with each other.
Citism is peace at home.
Citism is mayhem of the streets.
Citism is architecture that blocks general perspective.
Citism distorts reality.
Citism is extended sound.
Citism is image created by sound.
Citism is exposure to the decaying influence of rain, sun, snow, age …
Citism is never the same; it grows, it expands along the experience of those who created it; - existing on the streets and walls of that which we knew as a place.
